Assignment 4-1 Online Course

Topic: Introduction to Martial Arts. This course will be a basic course on a few crucial aspects of Martial Arts, it will present ways of physical self-defense. Course Material will be drawn from a series of styles and fused together that the students may develop a theory of practical Martial Arts.

Needs: Everyone should know how to defend themselves physically against an attack, as well as preempt personal danger. For this course you will need a computer with an internet connection and be physically capable of performing Martial Arts.

Learners: This class is designed for everyone who is capable of physical movement. Students who are more adept physically and interested in the topic will draw more than those who are not. This course should be a starting point for students who have had zero or very little Martial Arts training, and it will hopefully serve as a gateway for them to make informed decisions on a further pursuit of Martial Arts study.

In this blog I will be describing the online course I will be offering entitled an introduction to Martial Arts.

Goals: 1. That students will gain an understanding of the nature of Martial Arts.

2. That students will develop their own independent interest in Martial Arts.

3. That students will learn some basic techniques.

4. That students will be able to access material on Martial Arts with an informed opinion.

5. That students will recognize different styles in Martial Arts, and their commonalities.

Teaching Methods:

1. Students will study online resources to broaden their understanding of Martial Arts.

2. Students will learn by modeling, interpreting, visualizing, seeing, and performing specific Martial Arts movements.

Overview:

The course will begin with research conducted by the students on various Martial Arts styles and the culture from which they grew. Crucial to this study will be the common need for Martial Arts. Then, students will study specific videos in order to practice simple techniques like balance, footwork, simple defense, and basic strikes. Students must practice these techniques in an appropriate manner without endangering themselves or others. Through this study students will learn self confidence, and where appropriate the course may serve as a gateway for a more rigorous study of Martial Arts.

Websites:

1. Wikipedia: Please use wikipedia to research these arts: Western Boxing, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazillian Ju Jitsu.

2. The Fight Authority: http://martialarts.about.com/od/styles/a/martialartstype.htm

Online Articles:

1. Eric: Martial Arts and Critical Thinking in the Gifted Education Curriculum. (ED467483)

2. National Geographic: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/08/060814-fight-science.html

Videos:

Martial Arts videos abound on the web. I would have my students pick an art they are interested based on their previous research and explore, then post the video to the rest of the class. Here are a few:

1. Motivation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhIy13Vzm2o
2. Fight Quest on the Discovery Channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc22z1-EYt0

The learning goal which I consider most important to develop details a few basic techniques I want my students to practice and understand. I would probably produce a video of techniques for them to practice.

Students are welcome to use email as the most appropriate and efficient means of communication with the instructor.

Students will be assessed by their participation in posting videos, communication with one another, a research paper that they will have developed, and meetings with the instructor.

Blog Shmog Week 2

Hello all,

Here I am blogging again. This time to tell you about my subject area and some professional interests. I have been a teacher for and youth worker for a number of years. Beginning at age 13 I became a summer camp counselor and continued in that kind of work for the next 15 years off and on. I began teaching officially while in college and have continued in that occupation since.

Perhaps it is in my blood or just a way to repair the world one step at a time but education is my calling. Pretty nice that I have found a calling as opposed to having had to search for one.

Anyway, I have two B.A. degrees, one in German and another in History. History is more along the lines of my focus area than is German. I lived in Israel for 4 years and have studied the Hebrew language my entire life. Hebrew is another passion I have, both teaching and learning. I am a Martial Arts practitioner and I continue to teach in this field as well. Currently, I also teach a class called Ethics and Cultures which covers nearly anything under the sun of social sciences.

Where I intend to take this "calling" depends on life's twists and turns. For now see ya!

Hey ya'll,

The first blog I've ever written. You may know me as an outgoing trouble making kinda guy. I am interested in history and languages. Both of which I teach full time, I guess more than full time. I am happily married to the best woman in the world who can cook up some great food in a flash. Anyway, that's about it for now. Blog shmog.
